Introducing the "Mother Ship" of the Rip Curl Pro Mentawai

The Indies Explorer will be the official channel boat for the Rip Curl Pro Mentawai at Macaronis. The boat will be home base for event judges, officials, and beach marshal, and house all competitors' surfboards. As one of the largest charter boats operating in the Mentawais, the Indies Explorer is the perfect facility for competitors to prepare for their heats and relax in style in between surfing, with a perfect view of the Macaronis lineup.

The Indies Explorer is also the vessel of choice for the Rip Curl Asia surf team during its voyage to Macaronis for the inaugural Rip Curl Pro Mentawai. The Rip Curl surf team will be headed to the Mentawais three days before the rest of the ISC competitors and event staff for a two-day mission to practice at Macaronis and strike out to other nearby waves and capture some world-class surfing content.

The Indies Explorer is an owner operated 115-foot ironwood ketch built exclusively for long range surf charters and exploration in Indonesia. Designed and built in Sulawesi by Haji Darmand and his team from late 1998 to early 1999, the boat was entirely refurbished in 2010-2011, making for one of the most comfortable vessels in the surf charter business.


The boat features eight air-conditioned private double cabins, four of which have two single-bunk style beds in them. The Indies Explorer also has a very roomy air-conditioned lounge area with a large flat screen TV, DVD, PS3 (Play station 3), fridge, music facilities and comfortable seating for 10 to 15, plus an open living room upstairs with another medium-size flat-screen TV with DVD and huge rear entertainment area.
